Chapter 11: Off to Church We Go

It was Sunday and I was so excited!

Why? Well, for one thing, there was no work to do...well, okay, there was still work, but not nearly as much as the other days of the week, so technically it counted as a day of rest.

When Miriam told me that we only had to tend to the animals in the morning, I felt like a twelve-year-old being dismissed from school early! It was like a half-day, only for adults, too!

That morning in particular, Zebediah got up early to milk and feed the livestock while I helped Miriam and the girls prepare a light breakfast before we all headed to church.

Church.

To say that I was mildly curious, was putting it lightly. Everything had been so completely different about the Amish lifestyle that I could only imagine what attending services would be like. I didn’t dare tell Miriam that aside from Christmas mass, I hadn’t stepped into a church in years and I was more than a little nervous. I hoped I knew what to do. I certainly didn’t want to embarrass my family.

After church, Miriam told me we would be heading back home to entertain a few visitors. I was actually looking forward to some socializing and couldn't wait to meet other members of the Amish community. I was so touched that Zebediah and Miriam extended me an invitation to attend church with their family. It was a big deal and not one easily given.

For the occasion, and to make sure I didn't stick out like a sore thumb, I chose a very simple light blue sundress that was long enough to cover my ankles. It hugged me tightly just above the waist and was the closest thing to ‘acceptable church attire’ that I could find in my luggage. I wrapped a beige shawl around my shoulders to cover my arms and combed my blonde hair up into a soft bun, which was then covered by a bonnet-styled hat that Nora was kind enough to lend to me. The only makeup on my face (within the guidelines of rule #9) was a hint of pink gloss on my lips and a subtle blush on my cheeks. If I had lived in Victorian times, I was sure I’d have been labeled a temptress! But in this decade, I was only too glad that the tabloid reporters back in New York didn’t have a camera trained on me when I stepped onto the porch. I could only imagine what the headline would read: “Carrington Chic Turned Country Frumpy.”

But no matter. Nothing could bring my spirits down. Not even a fictitious newspaper headline. I had a whole afternoon ahead of me with nothing to do that was even remotely related to manual labor! And as if things couldn't get any better, there was a horse-drawn carriage waiting to take us to Church. Unlike everything I’d assumed about the Amish that was wrong, the television show had actually gotten one thing right.
